I’m here to announce our 2020 Greater Keller Women’s Club Shining Star. Shining Star is an award given by the Arts Council Northeast to recognize outstanding volunteers in the community. GKWC has had a yearly Shining Star since 2002 with Linda Bowden being our first Shining Star.
It is with enormous pleasure that I announce this wonderful lady today. She is far more than simply a volunteer. She is a leader, a supporter of women, a mentor for women, a tower of strength and a pillar of our community. Everyone can recognize her by her beautiful smile.
She joined GKWC in 1991 and immediately jumped into the role of Treasurer. She has held numerous roles on the GKWC Board including President (95/96) Finance Committee and Treasure. She has been on the GKWC Foundation since 1998 as Director and is currently serving as President. She has been deeply involved in every Garden of Roses event and was a co-chair in 1998. She was the Gladys Barrett award winner in 2003. Her dedication to our club is unmatched. In our community she is active in her church, Shriners and Fort Worth Women’s Club.
For the Bowden, she was instrumental in getting our beautiful building ready for opening day and dedication. She could be seen on the construction site wearing a hard hat ensuring all was right. Everywhere you look in this building you see her hard work. She is a dynamo and a life force.
In honor of our 25th Anniversary of the Garden of Roses it is my extreme pleasure to announce Debbie Reynolds as our 2020 Shining Star.

The Greater Keller Women’s club is a group of community-minded women who host book clubs, fashion shows, game nights and craft auctions. We also raise money for charities and nonprofits through its own 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, The Greater Keller Women’s Club Foundation.
The club was formed as a way to bring Keller women together for fun and friendship, though community service has always been an integral part of the organization. For example, in addition to hosting speakers at the monthly luncheons, the club provides food for the Valentine’s Day lunch at the Keller Senior Center and puts up Christmas trees at the fire stations, Library and police stations for Christmas.
“We provide a way for people to volunteer,” Sherman says. We volunteer in the schools with reading buddies. We also volunteer at community events.”
Caroline Sherman joined the Greater Keller Women’s Club in 2007 and now she’s president of the organization.
“They were very welcoming to me and that’s what great about the Keller Women’s Club” says Sherman, a British native. “We have women in all different places in their life and they all connect in the club.
The Greater Keller Women’s Club has 275 members and always looking for more. The 22 year old group has donated more than $1.18 million to the community through its Foundation.
Groups helped by the Women’s Club Foundation include the Battered Women’s foundation and Christ’s Haven for Children.
Volunteer opportunities abound for members. The biggest event of the year is the Garden of Roses Fashion Show. This year it will be held at the Bowden Event Center. The majority of the money raised goes to the Foundation to fund scholarships for the seniors in the Keller ISD, as well as large donations to local charities. The next fashion show is March 24, 2018.
All are welcome to participate in this event... please go to GKWC.ORG and sign up

On Wednesday July 20, 2016, twenty-nine members received The President’s Volunteer Service Award honoring their commitment and many hours of service to one or more of the volunteer opportunities afforded to our members.
